Free Cycling

A great way to save money as well as saving our planet is to reduce, reuse and recycle! I have used the following site http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WakeFreecycle, successfully to find a new home for items we no longer need as well as finding items we do need. Curtains rods, cats toys, quickcrete, plant cuttings and many more! There are others out there, so feel free to try the one I gave you or to find another.

Prom savings

I am so proud of my daughter and her friends who all went to prom on a shoestring budget. The great part is that it they came up with the idea of saving. Finally teens are wizing up to the fact that prom expenses are such a rip-off.

Three of the girls (one of which is my daughter) wore previously used dresses from other friends. All but one girl did their hair themselves or with the help of mom or their friends. All did their own make-up. They opted to skip the costly limousine and drove in groups in their cars. Then they asked my husband and I to cook them dinner. It cost each teen $5 for the dinner, which included a main course, dessert and drinks in a beautifully decorated setting!

We cooked penne rustica for the main course, leaving the chicken and shrimp separate so that vegetarians or people with health or religious eating preferences could enjoy it as well. Hot rolls, french bread and a salad completed the main course.

A few of the moms volunteered help. One mom got the use of the church cafe and decorated the cafe in gold and black to match the Prom's Vegas theme. She had glasses individualized with each person's name on it. Clear plastic plates and silver colored plastic ware gave an elegant touch. She also made a big bowl of sherbet punch and water for drinks to go with dinner.

A second mom volunteered her house for the pictures in her garden. She made a raspberry punch, chocolate dipped strawberries and cream puffs for dessert.

A third mom volunteered her home for the after party. All in all, this group of 17 teens had a smashing time at a fraction of the price.

The one cost they all had was for corsages and boutineers. I made the boutineer, which my daughter gave her partner, myself. I bought a bunch of 4 roses at Walmart for $5.00, a stem of baby's breath at the florist for $1.50 and with some floral tape that I already had, assembled the bouttineer according to the instructions on http://www.ehow.com/how_4868909_make-boutineers-fresh-flowers.html and viola!

Parents of both boys and girls really appreciated these huge savings! Smart Teens!

Think about this for your teens next year.

Changing to real blogging

Hello Readers

Up to now, I've used this blog to let you know about any specials I am aware of. From now on, I will be using it as a blog, logging my daily savings. I think this will be more interesting and teach newcomers to coupons and saving how it's done!

I will start with my last big save. We went to the circus yesterday. I used the coupon from the News and Observer site and bought a set of 4 tickets for $40. These tickets usually cost $23 each, so that's a saving of $52. Also, as we were in the area a few weeks ago, I went to the RBC center and bought the tickets in person. This saved me the convenience fee of $4.75 per ticket! That's another $19. We had a big brunch before heading out to see the show. I had a $10 coupon for the restaurant, which cost me 80c at www.restuarant.com. That saved us $9.20 (we won't bother with the savings on the tax!) I bought cotton candy for our youngest daughter at the store for $1, and she ate this on the way to the circus. By the time we arrived, she was full of both food and candy and so I saved on buying the exorbitantly priced junk food and snacks. Saved at least another $10. A net savings of $9, if I based it on kiddie food and snacks only. There is still food and snacks for the rest of us, but since that is speculation, I'll just stick to the facts! So in total, I saved $89.20 for yesterday's outing!

Today I bought Gain laundry detergent (50 oz) from Harris teeter, normal price $6.59. I am an E-Vic member, so my price is $2.99 and I had a 50c coupon, which Harris Teeter doubles. That's a saving of $4.60 on just the one item. To sign up to be an E-Vic member, go to www.harristeeter.com. You'll get weekly emails informing you of the specials. Also, E-Vic members get certain items discounted just for them. These individually tailored specials print out on your Harris Teeter receipt, once you have made a purchase.
